5 Easy & Balanced Breakfasts

Having a balanced breakfast is essential to promoting health in both children and adults. In children, a balanced breakfast promotes optimal growth and development as well as mental focus and more steadied behavior. For adults, including a nutritious breakfast is associated with benefits such as reduced chronic disease risk, improved mental focus, and increased nutrient intake. Breakfast being the first meal of day also helps set appetites for the rest of the day. If we skip or consume an unbalanced breakfast, this is much more likely to leave appetites feeling unmet the rest of the day which often results in snacking on less nutrient dense foods. While most all agree on the importance of having a balanced breakfast, making this happen on a daily basis is a challenge for many. For the average individual, consuming a breakfast containing protein + carbs + fiber provides a balanced starting point for the day. Below, outlines some quick and easy go-to breakfast ideas to keep both kids and adults feeling balanced!

  1. Whole grain English muffin with peanut butter topped with sliced banana and berries

This breakfast provides a great balance of high fiber carbohydrates (fruits + whole grain) plus protein (nut butter). This meal promotes a steady release of energy helping us stay satisfied until our next meal or snack time. It is also easy to put together which means school aged kids could practice their food skills and independence by making it for themselves. It can also be partially prepped ahead of time to help prevent a rushed morning.

  1. Greek yogurt with fruit

This breakfast provides a great protein and carbohydrate balance plus a good source of bone strengthening calcium and vitamin D! The fruit on top can naturally sweeten the Greek yogurt as well as add fiber to support a healthy gut. If a little more sweetness desired, try adding 1-2 teaspoons of honey (avoid for children under 1 year) or maple syrup. For additional protein, and for inflammation fighting omega-3 fatty acids, consider throwing in some walnuts (avoid whole nuts for children under 3 years) or ground flaxseed.

  1. Whole wheat wrap with cheese and turkey sausage and apple slices

This breakfast comes with fiber-rich carbohydrates and 20+ grams of protein. It can also be prepped ahead and heated up in the morning to save time. While apple slices can make a great side for this dish, any fruit will make a wonderful fiber and antioxidant rich add-on!

  1. Half whole grain bagel with cottage cheese and strawberries

This quick balanced breakfast offers fiber, antioxidants, protein, and calcium! Chopping the strawberries ahead of time and adding to cottage cheese in the fridge can turn morning breakfast making into a true breeze-just spread over half a whole grain bagel or bread, and voila! Breakfast is served.

5. Overnight Oats+

A breakfast packed with healthy gut promoting fiber, anti-inflammatory omega-3s and antioxidants, in addition to a great balance of protein and carbohydrates, yes, please! Mix oats with Greek yogurt, chia or ground flaxseeds, milk, fruit of choice, and 1-2 teaspoons of sweetener such as honey (avoid for children under 1 year) or maple syrup in a single serving lidded container and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, just top with fresh fruit and/or nuts, if desired, and enjoy!
